Thursday, March 19th, from 11-12:20 the De Queen campus of UA Cossatot will be hosting a Drug Prevention Program for students in conjunction with the Sevier County Coalitions’ Live Well Sevier County Committee and the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office. All UAC instructors are asked to encourage students to attend.
The Sevier County Sheriff's Office will bring RSAT Drug Prevention Program completers to share stories of addiction, incarceration, and recovery. They are also able to perform a skit of the family unit who experiences addiction, incarceration, and how the children are affected. They could have several different people telling about how their addiction started and the adverse effects of addiction upon their life.
The mission of our program is to show the people how easy it is to get off track in life by making wrong choices. The wrong choices that we make can have lasting effects. These adverse effects of addiction can impact our choices, our family, and then ultimately their future.
The objective of their program is ultimately to teach the people to not use drugs. They also want the people to know that if they are already using drugs or drinking that they can stop. They will bring two visual aids, a coffin and an inmate in a jumpsuit, and the purpose is to show that drugs will lead you to three places- Jails, Institutions, or death.
This program has affected some people in an emotional way. The reality of addiction and its impacts is not usually talked about so many people have suppressed the emotions associated with this issue. They have had numerous students cry and become willing to open up every time that we have given their program.
