Death is a topic that many of us do not want to imagine. Advancements in science and medicine mean people today are healthier and live longer. Yet, for those in the 19th century, death was a brutal fact that waited around the corner and touched everyone from all walks of life and social classes. Dying happened in the home, surrounded by friends and family, not in a hospital or off in a distant land. After death, there were social rules of mourning people followed.
