Single Parent Scholarships Awarded

Single Parent Scholarship Winners

Announced at UA Cossatot

On Thursday, April 18, 2019, the Sevier County Single Parent Scholarship committee held their annual spring fish fry fundraiser at UA Cossatot’s De Queen Campus. The fish fry took place in UA Cossatot’s Weyerhaeuser room from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM, as the Argenbright Band provided entertainment. At 6:00 PM the committee announced that five Sevier County students had been selected to receive scholarships.

The fish fry is a fundraiser that is used to raise money for scholarships that are given to single parents, but businesses, clubs, associations, and individuals can also provide scholarships to the committee. “We appreciate everyone that buys a fish dinner at our fundraiser, and we really appreciate sponsors who give scholarship donations on their own to be used for students selected from the Single Parent Scholarship committee,” said Single Parent Scholarship committee President, Jerry Davis.

Viridiana Cisneros and Jacqueline Rodriguez were two of the recipients present at the banquet. Cisneros received a scholarship for $450 from the Argenbright Band, and Jacqueline Rodriguez received a scholarship for $900 from Pilgrim’s Pride. Sandy Chandler, Kayle Helms, and Andrea Ruiz were unable to attend the banquet but did receive scholarships. Chandler received an $800 scholarship from the Rotary Club, Helms received a $650 scholarship from Bancorp South, and Ruiz received an $850 scholarship from Gentry Chevrolet.

Viridiana Cisneros, Sandy Chandler, and Kayle Helms are currently enrolled at UA Cossatot. Along with their other scholarships, they each received a $100 scholarship from UA Cossatot to be used for tuition and fees at the college,

The Sevier County Single Parent Scholarship committee’s Treasurer, Maureen Burrow said, “Our committee supports single parents, and we give scholarships two times a year. We hold this fish fry fundraiser once in the fall and once in the spring. At this banquet, we were able to provide five applicants financial aid assistance totaling $3,650. This is a great opportunity for single parents to apply for scholarships, and we need more applicants.”
