UAMS Graduates 1,134 Health Care Professionals

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) on May 18 conferred degrees and certificates to 1,134 students in its five colleges and graduate school.

UAMS awarded 175 degrees or certificates to students in the College of Medicine, 172 in the College of Nursing, 583 in the College of Health Professions, 78 in the College of Pharmacy, 86 in the Fay W. Boozman College of Public Health and 78 in the UAMS Graduate School. Thirty-eight students earned dual degrees.

Degrees and certificates conferred at this year’s commencement ceremony included doctor of philosophy; doctor of medicine; doctor of pharmacy; doctor of nursing practice; master of science; master of nursing science; bachelor of science in nursing; doctor of public health; master of public health; master of health administration; master of science in health care data analytics; postbaccalaureate certificate in public health; and a variety of allied health disciplines, including doctor of audiology, doctor of physical therapy, master of physician assistant studies, master of science and bachelor of science.

UAMS College of Nursing’s BSN Program Ranked 86th in Nation by U.S. News & World Report

U.S. News & World Report ranked the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Nursing among the nation’s 100 best undergraduate nursing programs for the 2023-24 academic year.

UAMS’ Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program tied for No. 86 out of 656 programs examined by the publication. UAMS was the only Arkansas institution to rank in the top 100.

U.S. News & World Report determined the rankings through surveys from top academic and nursing school officials, who rated BSN programs they were familiar with on a scale from 1 to 5. Schools on the list were required to have a bachelor’s-level accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing, and they needed to have recently awarded at least 40 BSN degrees.

UAMS’ Elizabeth Riley, DNP, APRN, Chosen as Fellow of National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education

Elizabeth Riley, DNP, APRN, clinical associate professor in the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) College of Nursing, has been selected as a fellow of the National League for Nursing (NLN) Academy of Nursing Education.

Riley is among 20 nurse educators who will be inducted into the academy during a Sept. 30 ceremony at the NLN Education Summit in Las Vegas. The Academy of Nursing Education has more than 300 members affiliated with teaching hospitals, academic institutions and other health organizations across the country.

UAMS College of Nursing’s Renteria, Whited Chosen For National Association’s Leadership Programs

Two faculty members from the UAMS College of Nursing have been selected to take part in leadership programs through the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN).

Fermin Renteria, DNP, APRN, assistant professor in the College of Nursing, was named to the 2022-23 class of the AACN’s Elevating Leaders in Academic Nursing (ELAN) program. The one-year fellowship is designed to improve the leadership skills of aspiring deans and senior faculty members. Participants begin with a five-day leadership immersion experience this summer, and they’ll attend virtual workshops and receive coaching throughout the year.

Teresa Whited, DNP, APRN, associate professor and associate dean for academic programs in the College of Nursing, was selected to attend the 2022-23 AACN-Wharton Executive Leadership Program. Whited previously completed the ELAN program. The AACN-Wharton program is designed to hone participants’ skills in negotiation, leadership and influencing others.
