UAMS Receives Additional $4.75 Million to Train Primary Care Physicians, Improve Rural Health Care

The University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) has received an additional $4.75 million in federal grant money to continue efforts to improve health care in rural Arkansas through training and retaining primary care physicians.

The supplemental award from the Health Resources and Services Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, comes in the third year of a four-year medical student education grant.

UAMS initially received $4.6 million in 2019, followed by an additional $2.83 million in 2020, to fund a multipronged approach to enhancing medical student education at UAMS as part of the Arkansas Medical Education Primary Care Partnerships project.

The project aims to recruit and retain medical students from rural and underserved areas of Arkansas in the hopes that they return to practice in those areas.

UAMS Outpatient Therapy Clinic Receives Parkinson’s Grant

Sept. 15, 2021 | FAYETTEVILLE – Parkinson Voice Project has named the UAMS Outpatient Therapy Clinic in Fayetteville as a recipient of its 2021 SPEAK OUT! & LOUD Crowd Grant Program.

SPEAK OUT! is a therapy regimen tailored to people with Parkinson’s disease to improve their voicing, and in turn, their swallowing. SPEAK OUT! is usually completed in 12 sessions spanning several weeks, and then the client transitions to the LOUD Crowd, which is a group therapy program that meets weekly. With completion of this therapy regimen, clients report improvement in their speaking and their overall quality of life.

Grant recipients include hospitals, university speech therapy clinics, private practices, and nonprofit organizations. Each clinic receives therapy supplies and free training for their speech-language pathologists and graduate students.

Arkansas Humanities Council Offering American Rescue Plan Grants

The Arkansas Humanities Council has received $759,297 from the National Endowment of the Humanities to implement the America Rescue Plan grant program aimed at helping the survival of Arkansas’ critical cultural institutions affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Maximum awards of up to $25,000 will be offered.

The funds are designated for operational expenses, strategic planning and capacity building and are available to nonprofit humanities-based cultural organizations in Arkansas. The American Rescue Plan grants provide immediate funds to museums, historical societies, college and universities, and other humanities-based cultural organizations.
