UA, NOWDiagnostics to Study COVID-19 Prevalence on Campus

The University of Arkansas and Springdale-based diagnostics testing manufacturer NOWDiagnostics Inc. announced Wednesday (June 16) a partnership to study the prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 virus antibodies among UA students, faculty and staff. SARS-CoV-2, or severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, is the virus that causes COVID-19.

NOWDiagnostics has developed a finger-stick antibody test that uses a blood sample to detect the presence of COVID antibodies in 15 minutes. The company’s self-contained ADEXUSDx COVID-19 antibody test, developed and produced in Arkansas, will be used for the study. The goal is to test each enrollee three times over four months. Recruitment for the study began March 17.

According to NOWDiagnostics, testing has already started and is tentatively set to end in July. However, investigators are preparing to expand the study to research the prevalence of COVID in children.

Governor Hutchinson Appoints Jeremy Wilson to UA Board of Trustees

LITTLE ROCK – Governor Asa Hutchinson has appointed Jeremy Wilson of Bentonville to the Board of Trustees of the University of Arkansas. Wilson replaces John Goodson, who has served since 2011. Wilson's term will expire March 1, 2031.

Wilson has over 25 years of business experience in the state and has founded or cofounded 10 companies in the past seven years. 

He is the founder of NOWDiagnostics, a leader in innovative diagnostic health testing. He currently serves as chairman of its board of directors. 

In 2012, he cofounded NewRoad Capital partners, one of Northwest Arkansas's largest private equity firms. 

Wilson has been recognized as one of Arkansas's 250 Most Influential Leaders for the past three years by Arkansas Business Publishing Group.

He is a graduate of the Walton College of Business and attended postgraduate studies through the Harvard Business School Executive Education Program.

Antibodies Might Provide Lasting COVID-19 Resistance

Whether one has long-term immunity to COVID-19 after recovering from the virus is unclear amid a lack of scientific evidence. Still, antibodies might be the key to develop a vaccine and prevent virus reinfection.

Two Northwest Arkansas companies have developed tests to detect the presence of virus antibodies. Fayetteville-based Namida Lab Inc. has offered antibody, or serology, tests since May. Springdale-based NOWDiagnostics Inc. has developed a 15-minute antibody test approved for clinical use in Europe while awaiting emergency use approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
