Multi-state study offers recommendations for keeping bermudagrass greener all season

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Whether it’s a football field, a golf course, or a home lawn, a new multi-state study offers recommendations for keeping some varieties of turfgrass greener, longer.

Researchers currently based in six states collaborated to identify three simple management tips to extend green color and reduce cold-weather injury in hybrid bermudagrass. Those recommendations include raising the mowing height, applying nitrogen fertilizer in the fall, and most importantly, maintaining adequate soil moisture in the lead-up to a short-term freeze event, such as a spring-time cold snap.

The study, “Improving winter survival of interspecific hybrid bermudagrass in the Mid-Atlantic region through cultural practices,” was published in the Crop, Forage & Turfgrass Management journal in August.

Wendell Hutchens, co-author of the study and an assistant professor of turfgrass science with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, noted that although the work focused on golf courses, the recommendations could apply equally in other situations.

“The practices can be used universally,” Hutchens said. “Sod growers can use the same practices, as can sports field managers and homeowners for their lawns.”

Sports field managers, Hutchens added, may benefit the most from this study. Much of the work for golf courses was done on fairway-height bermudagrass, which he said is “usually comparable to sports fields.”

“Many of our turfgrass professionals manage hybrid bermudagrasses throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Winter injury is one of their biggest concerns,” said David McCall, co-author of the study and associate professor of turfgrass pathology and precision management in Virginia Tech’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. “This multi-state project was designed to answer some practical questions that would benefit our industry stakeholders.”

According to the study, hybrid bermudagrass is susceptible to cold-weather damage in the transition zone, an area that includes a band from Maryland and Virginia on the East Coast to Arkansas, parts of Missouri and Oklahoma, all the way to California on the West Coast. While the study highlights the Mid-Atlantic region, the work is relevant for anywhere in the transition zone, Hutchens added.

“The transition zone is where cool and warm climates meet,” Hutchens said. “That’s where we can grow every species of turfgrass — warm season and cool season — but they all struggle to some degree. And that provides ample research opportunities.”

In addition to Hutchens and McCall, other co-authors of the study include Joseph Doherty, former graduate student at the University of Maryland; Joseph Roberts, associate professor with Clemson University’s College of Agriculture, Forestry and Life Sciences; Eric DeBoer, assistant professor with the LSU AgCenter in Louisiana; Jordan Booth, senior director of the U.S. Golf Association’s course consulting service; and Michael Battaglia, graduate student at the University of Arkansas’ Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences. The Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station is the research arm of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture.

Results and recommendations from field trials

Hutchens said the research team set out to evaluate the effects of soil fertility, mowing height and moisture to avoid cold-weather injury, also known as winterkill.

“Those are three primary management practices for turfgrass, but particularly with winterkill, they play a major role,” he said. “We found some pretty interesting data during the first couple of years of our study.”

Roberts noted that historically, avoiding late-summer applications of nitrogen on bermudagrass was the standard.

“Healthy roots are vital to winter survival, and it was thought that fall fertilization could favor lush foliar growth in lieu of root growth, therefore increasing chances of winter injury,” Roberts said. “However, our research showed that slow-release nitrogen applications through mid-September had either no impact or in some cases, positive impacts on turfgrass quality and color.

“More importantly, no negative impacts were observed as a result of late-season nitrogen applications,” he said.

The work with mowing height also yielded an interesting insight, Hutchens said.

“Mowing height didn’t have a substantial effect on winterkill, but it did reduce winter weed populations when we mowed at higher heights, which is a really useful finding and a serendipitous takeaway from the study,” Hutchens said.

“The general rule of thumb is to increase mowing heights slightly as bermudagrass approaches winter dormancy,” McCall said. “How much depends on the starting point while actively growing in-season.

“In our study, 0.75 inches seemed to be the sweet spot, though we did not see consistent impacts of mowing height on winter injury. We did, however, notice that mowing lower at 0.5 inches opened the canopy enough for weeds to germinate much more frequently, and mowing at 1 inch sometimes slowed spring green up a little,” he said.

McCall noted that these mowing heights are considerably lower than how a home lawn should be maintained.

Moisture is critical

Due to mild and wet winter conditions at the field trial locations in Maryland and Virginia, the researchers performed several experiments using freeze chambers to mimic winter weather conditions. When Hutchens started his job in Arkansas, he worked with Battaglia and DeBoer to evaluate the relationship between soil water content and level of cold-weather injury.

DeBoer, who mainly participated in the study as a Ph.D. student at the University of Arkansas before taking up his post with the LSU AgCenter, said the research found a strong association between soil moisture and winterkill symptoms.

“There is definitely a positive correlation with increased soil moisture prior to short-term freezing events, resulting in better turf survival,” DeBoer said.

One possible explanation according to DeBoer may be a temporary heating effect from the irrigation water buffering the roots from cold temperatures. DeBoer cautioned there is a high degree of variability from year to year and site to site.

“It’s not cut and dry, say, to irrigate your soil to 25 percent volumetric water content before a freeze, and you’ll be fine,” DeBoer said. “The idea is to avoid having droughty soil before a freezing event.”

Volumetric water content is a measurement of how much water a given volume of soil contains. The amount of water that a field can hold depends on the type of soil, Hutchens noted.

“Adequate soil moisture is certainly one of the most crucial management practices to reduce winterkill,” Hutchens said.

Reaping rewards from collaboration

Hutchens noted that the multi-state collaboration was a key part of the success of this study.

“You get a lot of different ideas and perspectives,” he said. “This project demonstrates that these collaborative efforts across multiple universities can be really successful. It takes a lot of legwork to organize it all, and the initial work is challenging, but the rewards that you reap from it are totally worth it.”

Hutchens said the team began the work in 2019 while he was a graduate student at Virginia Tech, working under McCall as his adviser. Booth was working as a research associate at Virginia Tech at the time before joining USGA. Doherty was a graduate student at the University of Maryland working under Roberts, who later took a job at Clemson University. DeBoer and Battaglia got involved when Hutchens moved to Arkansas in 2022.

“This project exemplifies the benefits of collaboration, as the primary study was performed at three geographically unique locations in the Mid-Atlantic,” McCall said. “By bringing in additional resources from northwest Arkansas, we were truly able to use broad strokes for practical recommendations to turfgrass professionals throughout the transition zone with confidence that our results apply across the board.”

In addition to the value of the research team’s collective experience, Roberts also noted the added value of testing recommendations across multiple geographical areas.

“Collaborative efforts not only helped push this research forward, but performing field research across multiple field sites in different states enhanced the recommendations offered to growers across the transition zone,” Roberts said.

Dean MacKeith helped to introduce mass timber to state

Mass timber products have become significant to many large construction projects in Northwest Arkansas thanks in part to the advocacy of Peter MacKeith, dean of the University of Arkansas Fay Jones School of Architecture and Design.

MacKeith became a fast advocate for these products when he joined the UA more than 10 years ago. The advocacy has led to multiple large-scale mass timber projects on campus, timber executive gifts to the UA and piqued the interest of Bentonville retailer Walmart enough to use mass timber products to construct its new home office.

According to WoodWorks, mass timber products are engineered wood building materials made by layering and bonding wood. They are code-certified internationally and can be used for frames, floors, roofs and walls. The most common products include cross-laminated timber (CLT), glue-laminated timber (glulam) and dowel-laminated timber. CLT and glulam have been used in the most significant projects in Northwest Arkansas.

Boozman shares memories of Rogers Veteran

WASHINGTON– U.S. Senator John Boozman (R-AR) recognized the service and sacrifice of Chris Traxson in ‘Salute to Veterans,’ a series highlighting the military service of Arkansans.

Traxson was born in Rogers and graduated from Rogers High School in 1999. He attended Northwest Arkansas Community College before enrolling at the University of Arkansas where he earned a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.

He served as a police officer for his hometown and, after a year in that role, enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve.  

Traxson is from a family with a history of military service, including his dad who was drafted during the Vietnam War, and was inspired to help in the War on Terror.  

“It was a time when I felt like I wanted to do more. There was a lot going on in the Middle East,” he said. “I just felt like I was in a place in my life from the physical fitness standpoint and maturity level where I thought I could go in and help with the effort.” 

Traxson was encouraged to join the Marines by some of his law enforcement colleagues who were veterans of the branch. He wanted to serve on the frontlines and was convinced the Marine infantry division was the quickest path to combat. He also appreciated its proud tradition.

He was 24 years old when he attended bootcamp, “I was definitely the old man, they kinda came to me for that fatherly guidance even though I wasn’t a father. And it was the same in infantry  school as well.”

In 2006 he learned his unit was attaching to another from Detroit as part of a large battalion build up that would eventually be deployed to Fallujah, Iraq.  

Traxson arrived in Fallujah two years after the battles of 2004 and said the locals were just beginning to return to the city. However, there was severe property damage and a lot of hostility.

“In the first two weeks we were there it was extremely quiet and then after that two-week period things started popping off. We were getting enemy contact almost every day. And I had to ask, ‘Why was it so quiet those first two weeks?’ and they informed me that they were watching us,” Traxson recalled. “They knew we were a new unit.” 

Traxson said he had to be ready to go at a moment’s notice, so after long days out on a mission, the marines had to have their gear and vehicles prepared for the next time they would be called upon. His assignment was to ride in the turret of the Humvee operating the machine gun and watching the roadway for improvised explosive devices (IEDs).

He’d only been in Iraq four weeks when he was injured by an IED.

“I wasn’t even supposed to go out that day,” he said. He was given the option to sit out for 48 hours because his team had rolled over an explosive device on its last mission. However, he was cleared to participate and decided to join. 

He doesn’t remember a lot about the explosion but recalled the doors of the vehicle blew off. “I had taken off running because I was on fire,” he said. 

The marines in his Humvee were loaded onto a truck and taken to the hospital. Three weeks later he woke up at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. 

He had third-degree burns on 56 percent of his body. In the two years of recovery, he had more than 70 surgeries.

His mother, a nurse, quit her job in Arkansas to help take care of him and advocate on his behalf while he was in recovery. “She wanted to make sure I had somebody to speak for me,” he said. 

During his recovery, he received letters from his fellow marines updating him on friends in his unit. “Obviously, [we’d] suffered casualties and they would let me know about who those were,” he said. “Some of them I was close to so it was hard not being able to go to their funerals.” 

Traxson received a Purple Heart for his sacrifice. “No one wants to get a Purple Heart, but I’m happy to accept it.”  

He was discharged in 2009 and worked part-time at a local store as he continued his healing while also serving as a security guard at Northwest Arkansas Community College for eight years. He graduated from business school in 2013 and today works at the Benton County Veterans Service Office where he helps veterans in getting the benefits and services they’ve earned. “My experience makes it a lot easier for them to talk to me.”

He has been honored to talk to students about his journey and encourages them to be optimistic in addition to aspiring to a lifetime of public service whether in the military or other civic engagement.  

“Some of the best people I ever met were people in uniform,” he said. “They came from all over the country. They were all different colors, religions and that’s the thing I like about the military is that when you go in there, we all wear the same uniform. We’re not anything else but the uniform we wear. I learned a lot from the people I served with. They made me better.”

“Chris Traxson honorably served his country and has made a great sacrifice. His perseverance and determination are an inspiration to us all. I’m proud to capture and preserve his memories of his service for the benefit of future generations,” Boozman said. 

Boozman submitted Traxson’s entire interview to the Veterans History Project, an initiative of the Library of Congress’s American Folklife Center to collect and retain the oral histories of our nation’s veterans.

7 startups to participate in UA outdoor recreation incubator

The sixth cohort of Greenhouse Outdoor Recreation Program (GORP) includes companies focused on cycling, firearms, outdoor apparel and camping, the University of Arkansas announced Tuesday (Aug. 13). The 12-week incubator starts Aug. 27.

Leaders from the University of Arkansas Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation oversee the program. GORP supports startups building products and services in the outdoor recreation industry by providing workshop training, team mentoring and business development consulting to help them scale.

GORP’s fall program runs through Nov. 12 and provides up to $15,000 in non-dilutive seed funding per company. This type of funding doesn’t require the owner to give up equity in the company.

Oaklawn president donates $500,000 to Razorback Foundation

Oaklawn Racing Casino Resort President Louis Cella has donated $500,000 to the Razorback Foundation at the University of Arkansas and is challenging other businesses to contribute to the foundation.

Cella, a graduate of the University of Arkansas School of Law, said in a statement that “these are tough financial times for college sports,” and the foundation is no exception.

“They are competing in the toughest conference in the nation, and regularly going up against schools with far greater resources,” said Cella. “If the Razorbacks are going to remain competitive, it’s going to take backing from all of us. … I realize this doesn’t solve the financial crunch for U of A athletics.  But if more Arkansas businesses will consider pitching in too, it will be a huge step in the right direction for Razorback nation.”

Kincaid named UA Honors College director of development

Missy Darwin Kincaid has been named director of development at the University of Arkansas’ Honors College, the university announced Monday (Aug. 12). The university alumna and Little Rock native began the job July 15.

According to the university, Kincaid has 23 years of fundraising and leadership experience and will lead fundraising work with the Honors College

“Missy Kincaid brings to the Honors College a wealth of experience in philanthropy, community engagement and advocacy,” Lynda Coon, dean of the Honors College, said in the statement. “Her energy coupled with her love for the University of Arkansas are electrifying—the effects are already palpable in our wing of Gearhart Hall.”

Faulkner County teen wins Arkansas 4-H Governor's Award

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Kacie Clark of El Paso is the third member of her family to be a finalist for the Arkansas 4-H Governor’s Award, and on July 24, she clinched the highest honor awarded in Arkansas 4-H and received a $3,000 scholarship.

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders announced Clark, 18, as the winner in a recorded message played during the Arkansas 4-H Awards of Excellence ceremony at the University of Arkansas.

More than 250 4-H members from across the state are convened on the campus for the annual Arkansas 4-H State O-Rama. During the week-long event, 4-H members elect new officers and participate in more than 30 competitive events, ranging from archery and ATV safety to public speaking, poultry judging and performing arts.

“I feel like I’m going out with a bang,” Clark said of her 13 years in 4-H. “I feel very honored. All of us have done so much in 4-H. Any one of the other finalists would have deserved it.”

Three other 4-H members were finalists for the award with Clark: Connor Henry of Arkansas County; Josiah Lillard of White County; and Zach Gardner of Washington County. They each received a $1,000 scholarship.

“All four of you have achieved amazing things for yourself and your communities,” Gov. Sanders said. “I’m proud of each of you.”

Finalists are chosen based on their accomplishments in leadership, citizenship, community service, 4-H projects and activities, and overall contributions to Arkansas 4-H. The four scholarships are sponsored by 4-H alumni Dr. Joel Anderson, chancellor emeritus of the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. The 4-H Governor’s Award winner’s silver tray is sponsored by former 4-H member and agent Darlene Millard.

A winning spirit

“I am struck by the level of passion and excitement each of our finalists demonstrated,” said Debbie Nistler, assistant vice president for 4-H and youth development for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “They are amazing examples of the spirit of 4-H, and Kacie truly embodies that spirit.”

Earlier Thursday, Clark competed in the performing arts vocal competition, singing “Deeper than the Holler” by Randy Travis. After she took her seat, she clapped and called out encouragement to her competitors. 

The 4-H way is to learn by doing through project work, and Clark has learned something new every year. On Thursday, she competed in interior design for the first time.

Clark joined 4-H when she was 5 years old, and she showed a pig at a county fair during her first year. She has had projects in healthy living, fine arts, performing arts-vocals, public speaking, forestry and poultry. She helped organize the first 4-H Food Challenge team to compete in culinary skills and has served as a 4-H camp counselor and a Teen Leader. For the past year, she has served as vice president on the 4-H State Officer Team.

Clark plans to attend Arkansas State University-Beebe this fall and then transfer to ASU-Jonesboro or the University of Arkansas to pursue a degree in agricultural business.

That doesn’t mean she’s done with 4-H. Clark said she plans to remain active in 4-H as a volunteer and wants to lead a Cloverbud Club in Faulkner County.

Clark’s two older brothers, Brent and Travis, both previously served as 4-H state presidents and were finalists for the Governor’s Award.

Shortly after Clark received the award, text messages began arriving from her family watching via livestream.

Her brother, Travis, texted his one-word congratulations: “Nice!”

Practice caution to prevent heat-related illness

LITTLE ROCK — With summer 2024 on track to be the hottest summer on record for many cities in the U.S., it’s important to follow heat safety guidelines to prevent sunburns, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Bryan Mader, extension assistant professor of health for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said people should practice caution when temperatures reach above average highs for their specific region.

“While there is not a specific temperature — such as 100 degrees Fahrenheit — at which we should be more concerned than another, a simple way to think about being extra cautious around heat is when temperatures and humidity are above average for a given geographic area,” Mader said. “Because some places are hotter than others, this depends on what’s considered average for a particular location at that time of year. Humid and muggy conditions can make it seem hotter than it really is.”

Heat-related illnesses are preventable if precautions are taken, Mader said. These illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke, occur when the body is not able to properly cool itself.

“While the body normally cools itself by sweating, during extreme heat, this might not be enough,” Mader said. “In some cases, a person’s body temperature rises faster than it can cool itself down. This can cause damage to the brain and other vital organs.”

Though everyone is susceptible to heat-related illness, Mader said there are special populations who should take extra caution during heat exposure. Those at increased risk include adults 65 and older, infants and children, pregnant women and people with chronic illnesses such as heart disease or cancer. People without access to air conditioning, athletes and outdoor workers are also at a higher risk.

Signs of heat-related illness

  • Heat stroke: A high body temperature greater than 103 F; hot, red or dry skin; fast pulse; dizziness, nausea, confusion and loss of consciousness.

  • Heat exhaustion: Heavy sweating; cold, pale and clammy skin; fast, weak pulse; nausea or vomiting; muscle cramps, tiredness or weakness; dizziness; headache and fainting.

  • Heat cramps: Heavy sweating during intense exercise; muscle pain or spasms.

  • Heat rash: Red clusters of small blisters that look like pimples on the skin, usually on the neck, chest, groin, elbows or on the anterior side of arms.

Heat-related illness prevention tips

  • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothes to improve airflow and aid in natural cooling.

  • Stay indoors when able, and avoid using appliances that give off heat.

  • Do not leave children, or anyone else, in cars unattended. Double check all the seats in your vehicle before walking away.

  • Schedule outdoor activities with a plan in place. Try to limit outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day. Rest, often, in shaded areas to limit heat exposure.

  • Wear sunscreen to protect your skin, and wear hats, long sleeves and pants when able, and when it does not restrict your movements or your ability to sweat naturally.

  • Drink plenty of fluids, and do not consume sugary or alcoholic beverages when you are in the heat.

  • Replace salts and minerals, such as electrolytes, frequently during heat exposure. Sweating eliminates electrolytes, which can be replaced using a sports drink, or another source for replenishing minerals.

  • Stay informed about changes in the weather, especially related to extreme temperatures, humidity and UV exposure.

  • Use a buddy system, especially for outdoor workers or athletes, to ensure safety.

  • Check on those who are at high risk, especially if they do not have air conditioning in their home or place of employment.

Mader said that while working in the heat, it is recommended to drink at least 8 ounces of water every 15-20 minutes. This translates to approximately 24-32 ounces per hour of heat exposure.

Best meat quality, most economical cattle ‘finishing’ diet has more byproduct

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — A high-energy diet that includes higher amounts of dry soybean hulls was the most economical choice for Arkansas beef producers who want to “finish,” or bring their weaned cattle up to market weight, on the farm.

An Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station study conducted at the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope showed that a high-byproducts diet, which uses a material that may otherwise be wasted, also provided the best meat quality among three diets tested.

“Cattle producers are looking for alternative methods to finish their cattle and successfully diversify their operations through direct marketing of their products to consumers,” said Daniel Rivera, associate professor of animal science and director of the Southwest Research and Extension Center for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. The experiment station is the research arm of the Division of Agriculture.

Rivera said the research team wanted to know the feasibility of keeping “feeder” cattle on the pasture with a high-energy supplement to achieve results comparable to those at feedlots. In the process, they would calculate the cost and measure the impact of different diets. Feeder cattle are weaned calves that have reached a weight between 600 to 800 pounds.

The study stems from supply chain setbacks for meat supply during the COVID-19 pandemic and passage of the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security or CARES Act, which opened alternative markets for cattle producers. The research was funded in part by a grant from the Arkansas Beef Council.

“Arkansas is not typically a cattle finishing state,” Rivera said. “We don't have that infrastructure here like they do out West and in the Midwest. A lot of local producers had an interest in finishing cattle, but they didn't have the background or the knowledge base to do it correctly.”

Rivera said the study showed that cattle can be fed on pasture and finished in a similar amount of time as cattle fed at a feedlot, with no negative effect on quality.

The study took place in 2023 and evaluated the effects of three diets on weight-gain performance, carcass quality and meat characteristics of 63 locally sourced crossbred feeder steers, which are young males that have been castrated.

The feeder steers weighed on average 796 pounds at the start of the study. They were divided by body weight, fed assigned diets for 161 days and weighed every 28 days before being shipped to a commercial slaughter facility in Arkansas City, Kansas. Rivera said the facility was used to accommodate the higher number of cows than could be processed at a local facility in a timely manner. The cost of transportation to the facility in Kansas was not accounted for in the study because it was irrelevant to the scenario.

Diets tested

The three diets tested included:

  • Conventional feedlot finishing diet with roughage: 10.9 percent bermudagrass hay, 56.2 percent cracked corn, 30 percent corn gluten feed and 2.9 percent mineral mix.

  • High-starch supplement fed at 2 to 2.25 percent of body weight, with free access to bermudagrass pasture: 50 percent cracked corn, about 21.6 percent corn gluten feed, 24.5 percent dried distiller’s grains with solubles, 2.9 percent mineral mix and 1 percent limestone for calcium.

  • High-byproduct supplement fed at 2 to 2.25 percent of body weight with free access to bermudagrass pasture: 14.8 percent cracked corn, 21.9 percent corn gluten food, 21.9 percent dried distiller’s grains with solubles, 38 percent dry soybean hulls, 2.9 percent mineral mix, and 0.5 percent limestone.

The hull of a dry mature soybean contains about 85 percent carbohydrates and 9 percent protein.

“The reason we chose to test the byproduct diet is because it is more user-friendly,” Rivera said. “Most producers wouldn't run the risk of acidosis or some of the problems that you might see with a high-starch diet that is found in a lot of feedlot type diets.”

Acidosis is when the cow’s digestive system pH is lower than normal and can lead to a lack of appetite, increased breathing and sometimes death.

More ‘Choice’ quality with high-byproduct diet

Rivera said the results of all three diets were statistically similar, with the average weight increasing from about 800 pounds to 1,200 pounds throughout the study. However, the high- byproduct diet offered the best economic return whether the calf was purchased outright or born on the farm.

The percentage of beef that was “USDA Choice” quality grade or higher was 80 percent with the high-byproduct diet, 66 percent with the conventional feedlot diet, and 62 percent on the high-starch supplement diet. “Choice” is second to “Prime” in the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s beef quality grading system, which is a measure of palatability of beef, or eating quality. Quality grades are a combination of marbling, which is the fine, small flecks of fat in the steak and maturity, which is how old cattle are at the point of harvest.

“Preliminary performance data shows that we were able to indeed produce a high-quality product,” Rivera said. “They were pretty similar in terms of their body weight and quality.”

The high-starch diet offered the lowest carcass value per head at about $1,958. The conventional feedlot diet provided the second-highest value at $2,021.85 per head, and the high-byproduct diet offered the highest carcass value per head at $2,065.89.

Cost to finish on the farm

Rivera said the cost of increasing the weight of a weaned calf from about 750-800 pounds to a finished weight of about 1,200 pounds was approximately $550 per head for all three treatments.

“If you’re a producer and you’re wanting to start this endeavor, this gives you a blueprint that shows it’s going to cost roughly $500 to $600 per head to get from point A to point B,” Rivera said.

Consumer preferences

Michelle Johnson, animal science graduate research assistant at the University of Arkansas, was the lead author of the study. She defended her master’s thesis in July with results from the study, offering evaluations from trained taste panelists who noted there were no sensory characteristic differences in the beef from the three different diets.

Kelly Vierck, assistant professor of animal science, explained that despite being fed a high-byproduct diet or starch supplementation, the cattle fed those treatments met or exceeded the standards set by conventionally fed cattle with no detriment to important beef quality traits, such as tenderness, juiciness, or flavor.

Johnson said beef from the pastured groups, which included the high by-product and high starch diets, had better color stability. Research has shown that while color doesn’t correlate with flavor, consumers prefer bright red color, and color stability indicates longer shelf life, Johnson noted.

Roy Rom remembered for contributions to fruit industry, university

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — On campus, he was Dr. Roy Rom, but the fruit industry and the locals knew him as Mr. Peach and Mr. Apple.

Horticulture University Professor Emeritus Rom passed away June 15, surrounded by his children. He was 102.

Mary Savin, head of the horticulture department, said “Dr. Rom was a giant in American pomology and tree fruit science in the late 20th century.”

Rom joined the horticulture department in 1959, conducting work in all three land-grant missions: teaching, research and extension. It was a time of growth for Arkansas’ fruit breeding program as Rom worked alongside two who would be inducted into the Arkansas Agriculture Hall of Fame, fruit breeding program founder Jim Moore and Justin Morris.

“His research was always mission-oriented and developed applicable results,” Savin said. “He contributed to the strong national reputation of the horticulture department and especially the fruit science program alongside colleagues Dr. Moore and Dr. Morris.”

John Clark, distinguished professor emeritus, remembered his former professor not only for his commitment and thoroughness, but also his resilience and for the way he could communicate.

“He was an accomplished speaker. I had him in class, and of course a good speaker is a good characteristic to have as a teacher,” Clark said. “But I later heard him speak formally to public audiences, and he was a true orator. Well spoken, good timing, great enunciation, concise. I admired his ability.”

Clark said Rom’s “favorite crop was apples, and his enthusiasm for that crop was always strong; even having his own orchard was his testament of his love for that crop. He had the same enthusiasm in his research at the Fruit Research Station, be it pruning or physiology studies or his cooperation with Jim Moore on the apple breeding.”

Rom garnered great respect across campus, Savin said. 

“He was a quiet but strong leader within the department, college and across campus. He was deeply engaged in the community and his family’s apple orchard became almost legendary among schoolchildren and apple eaters,” she said. “He was the quintessential university professor.”

As a faculty member, Rom served in several officer roles of Gamma Sigma Delta, including the president, a long-time secretary-treasurer of the UA Foreign Student Association and chairman of the Campus Council and Campus Faculty. Gamma Sigma Delta is an agriculture-focused organization.

Rom also helped re-establish the Arkansas State Horticulture Society, serving as executive secretary for two decades. Rom was recognized for his research accomplishments, as a Fellow of the American Society for Horticultural Science, with the Wilder Medal from the American Pomological Society, and the International Dwarf Fruit Tree Association Outstanding Researcher award. He was recognized as "Mr. Peach" by the National Peach Council.

Born Jan. 29, 1922, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to Roy George Rom and Emmie Glaettli Rom, he grew up with three sisters, Betty, Rita and Carol. He attended the University of Wisconsin where he pursued a degree in horticulture. During World War II, his academic career was put on hold, and he became a P-51 Mustang fighter pilot instructor. He was honorably discharged as a second lieutenant at the end of the war and returned to college to finish his degree.

While in college he became the coxswain for the University of Wisconsin championship lightweight crew and, upon graduation, was coach for the Wisconsin 1946 national championship lightweight crew. He went on to coach crew at Yale where he led the 1950 Yale lightweight crew to a national championship. One of his many points of pride was helping form and coaching the Northwest Arkansas Rowing Club.

After college, he met and married Margaret. After living briefly in New Haven, Connecticut, they returned to Wisconsin to start a family and he completed a Ph.D. in fruit crop production physiology at the University of Wisconsin. Shortly after graduating in 1959, he accepted a position at the University of Arkansas.

Rom started the Rom Family Orchard in 1967, selling apples at the farm, to local stores, and at the Fayetteville Farmers Market. He took immense pride in providing quality, locally grown apples for the community and especially enjoyed giving orchard tours to hundreds of school-aged children and sharing his love of apples, nature and the outdoors. He was "Mr. Apple."

In his spare time, Rom had a rich volunteer life in the community. He also loved to camp, hike and canoe with his family. He was a loyal Razorback athletics fan and supported the men’s and women’s intercollegiate teams.

He has since been recognized by the University Division of Advancement as a Tower of Old Main for his scholarship support. 

Rom is survived by his four children: Cristine, Gretchen, Curt and Mark, as well as their spouses and children.

Sherrie Smith retires after 18 years as manager of Arkansas Plant Health Clinic

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — When Arkansans get stumped by plant problems — whether they’re a home gardener or a row crop farmer — the Arkansas Plant Health Clinic in Fayetteville is here to help. After 18 years of service, Sherrie Smith, plant pathologist and instructor for the clinic, will retire Feb. 29.

The Plant Health Clinic is supported by the Cooperative Extension Service, part of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. Smith joined the clinic in 2006 after completing her master’s degree in plant pathology from the University of Arkansas.

“I’m excited about retirement, but I’ve loved my job so much that it’s kind of a pang to let go of it,” Smith said.

Ken Korth, professor and department head of entomology and plant pathology for the University of Arkansas System, said Smith has played a significant role in the success of the Plant Health Clinic.

“Sherrie and her guidance of the Plant Health Clinic have made a huge impact on Arkansans for almost two decades,” Korth said. “The clinic is viewed as an invaluable resource by clientele statewide, and this is a testament to the dedicated performance of Sherrie and her staff.”

Korth said Smith oversaw the move of the clinic from its original location in Lonoke to Fayetteville in 2009.

“That was a major undertaking, and she was responsible for designing and setting up the lab space which is now housed at the Shult Agricultural Research and Extension Center,” Korth said. “She has also grown with the position, and over the years the clinic has effectively adopted new technologies for pathogen detection and identification.”

Since 2006, Smith said she’s seen tens of thousands of plant samples and made many more diagnoses.  

“I’ve seen a lot of samples,” she said. “And the thing about the samples is there may be more than one diagnosis. You may have a turf sample and it has a patch disease, but it also might have insect damage, so some of our samples receive more than one diagnosis with more than one recommendation.”

Smith said most of the samples that the clinic receives are from county extension offices throughout the state. During the busy season, which runs March through October, Smith said the clinic typically receives 3,000-4,000 plant disease samples.

“Things start slowing down as winter approaches and we become less concerned about what happened to our tomato plants,” Smith said. “We do get some during the winter months, but one day last summer, we had 72 samples.”

The Arkansas Plant Health Clinic is one of the few plant diagnostic labs in the country that doesn’t charge for its services, which include several different kinds of diagnostic tests.

“Most of our samples end up going under the microscope, the dissecting scope and the compound scope for diagnoses,” Smith said. “We also run some serological tests that operate the same way, say, a pregnancy or a COVID-19 test works. But probably the biggest part of our tests is simply through an old-school microscope.” 

Pest and pathogen problems

During Smith’s career at the clinic, she’s helped provide molecular diagnosis for plant diseases that were new to Arkansas or even new to the United States.

“The following year after I first started, we found Asian soybean rust in the state for the first time, which caused a great deal of concern among our soybean growers because in South America and other places, it causes devastating losses to soybean crops,” Smith said. “But that has not occurred in the U.S., it just spooked everybody in the beginning.”

At the end of the 2023 growing season, Smith said the clinic received a sample with a pathogen that had not been seen in the United States previously. Clinic personnel are currently awaiting confirmation of the virus. If a sample is confirmed and considered to be a “quarantine pest,” state officials are notified, and a protocol is followed depending on the type of pest. Smith said sudden oak death, which is caused by Phytophthora ramorum, is a quarantine pest that the Plant Health Clinic has identified more than once.

Smith said that during most summers, the clinic is involved in what is called a ‘trace forward’ to track sudden oak death when it has been found in wholesale nurseries outside of the state.

“Then, all the state officials — not just in Arkansas, but in any state that received shipments from that nursery — have to go around to all the nurseries and check for symptomatic plants, take samples, bring them to their diagnostic labs, and then we run a test for species,” Smith said. “If we get a positive, we extract the DNA and send it to a lab that is qualified to run a test specifically for Phytophthora ramorum. So, we are involved in these kinds of projects for quarantine pests, and you really don’t know what you’re going to find.”

Strange samples

The Plant Health Clinic receives samples from every county in Arkansas, and it also has an Animal Plant Health Inspection Services, or APHIS, permit, which allows the clinic to receive samples from anywhere in the continental United States.

“We’re relatively close to both the Missouri and the Oklahoma line, so we get some samples from strawberry and blackberry growers in Oklahoma, and we get some wheat and tomato samples from Missouri,” Smith said. “Sometimes we will get a sample clear from the opposite side of the country. We don’t get an out-of-state sample every day, but it’s not unusual to get one several times a month during the growing season.”

The Plant Health Clinic is part of the Southern Plant Diagnostic Network, or SPDN, which is a partnership of 14 states and territories in the southeast United States that work together to detect pests and pathogens in the region. Smith said the SPDN hosts an annual contest for “who got the kookiest sample in.”

“We didn’t win the contest this year, but the winner was a very strange horned object,” she said. “It had little spikes all over it and was slimy, and it turned out to be part of a rubber ball that someone got out of a ditch and didn’t recognize because it had been so discolored and weathered and had goop on it. They thought it was something that had been alive.”

Smith said there’s never a dull moment in the Plant Health Clinic.

“About eight years ago, I opened an envelope and a little squashed dead bug fell out,” she said. “I looked at it under the microscope, and it was a bed bug. The company that sent it said it was running across the secretary’s desk. I thought, ‘Oh no!’”

Outreach and education

As part of her role as an instructor and plant pathologist, Smith also traveled to flower and garden shows, extension field days and Master Gardener events.

“I started attending the big flower show the first year I took the job, and since then we’ve built a portable diagnostic lab with traveling microscopes and a big TV screen that hooks up to the microscopes so people can see what we’re looking at,” Smith said. “We also hand out literature and answer questions and receive samples.

“The benefit of all this is that it puts the word out to the community that there is a lab that will look at their samples and help them,” she said. “It’s good publicity for both the Cooperative Extension Service and the University.”

Korth said Smith’s commitment to education has helped Arkansas growers of all scales and skill levels.

“For over 18 years, Sherrie has been diagnosing and helping to solve the problems of gardeners, farmers and commercial operations in Arkansas,” he said. “Just as importantly, she is an effective educator and was very active at garden shows, extension events, and other public outreach activities. She has also helped to train students over the years, and several of these have gone on to very successful careers as professional plant pathologists.”

Smith said she has particularly enjoyed being part of the service extension provides to Arkansans.

“I do love the outreach part of it,” she said. “While it’s always fun to solve a puzzle and get an answer, I love that we are helping people — whether it’s a granny with a rose in the yard or a grower with 5,000 acres of soybean and corn, we are providing a service that helps people, either emotionally, if it’s a plant you’re attached to at your home, or if it’s your livelihood.

“There’s a lot of satisfaction in being of service to people and really, that’s what the extension service is about: being of service to people in Arkansas,” Smith said. “The extension service is out there doing the work, and it’s an honor to be associated with the people who do that work.”

Ready for retirement

Rick Cartwright, former director of the Cooperative Extension Service, said he originally hired Smith at the Plant Health Clinic and that she “brought a can-do attitude and outstanding work ethic.”

“Over time, she transformed the clinic into a 21st-century model, with quick turnaround and timely results,” Cartwright said. “Her articles and searchable newsletters are widely used by county agents and the public, including me, both in Arkansas and around the country.

“I received many accolades over the years about her exceptional dedication and importance in extension,” he said. “She will be sorely missed, but I wish her all happiness and satisfaction in well-earned retirement.”

Smith, who lives in Joplin, Missouri, has been commuting 87 miles one-way to work in Fayetteville for the last 13 years. She said she’s “pretty tired of dodging deer in bad weather,” and she looks forward to taking a break from traveling for a while. In her new spare time, Smith’s six-month-old puppy, a golden doodle named Betty Boop, is sure to keep her busy, as will her flower gardens, her koi pond and her indoor 125-gallon tropical fish tank.

Reflecting on her time at the Plant Health Clinic, Smith said she will be leaving with many valuable friendships.

“I have made some really good friends here in the state among county agents, among government officials, and broadly across the United States, because plant pathology is a small world,” she said. “A lot of us know people from all over the place, even outside of the country. It’s been a delightful experience for me.”

Cooperative Extension Service launches new University Center website

LITTLE ROCK — The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Center for Rural Resilience and Workforce Development has launched a new website detailing the resources and services offered through its newest program, designed to support economic and workforce development across Arkansas.

NEW ONLINE RESOURCE — The University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture Center for Rural Resilience and Workforce Development has a new website with information about the resources and services it offers, including training and technical assistance, applied research and an interactive Development District map. In November 2023, the U.S. Economic Development Administration, or EDA, awarded a $650,000, five-year grant to the Cooperative Extension Service’s department of Community, Professional and Economic Development to establish and operate a University Center. Rather than a physical location, the EDA University Center program is a resource serving the state’s economic development ecosystem, with a particular focus on rural marginalized communities, including Hispanic and Marshallese communities.

The Center’s new website outlines information about the program and its services, including training and technical assistance, applied research and annual research findings reports. The website also features an interactive map of Arkansas’s eight EDA-funded Development Districts, which serve all 75 counties.

“The Development Districts offer incredible services to their communities, such as grant writing, planning and economic development projects, and we want to make sure anyone in their community can find their district and connect with them,” said Brandon L. Mathews, extension program manager for the University Center.

Mathews said that Heartland Forward, one of the strategic partners of the University Center, led the creation of the Development District map.

“The interactive map is just one of many visualizations we hope to build with the Center,” said Rodrigo Ramirez-Perez, research analyst for Heartland Forward. “Our goal is to make data accessible and usable throughout the project, while also uplifting the Development Districts and the incredible work they do for the state.”

Over the next five years, more information and resources will be added to the University Center website. Those resources include Labor Market Observatories, which will be dashboards that provide important data on workforce metrics for each of the eight districts.

Mathews said the Center will also offer a newsletter that highlights funding opportunities, EDA activities and updates, community and economic development district events, workshops and tools for workforce development. Native Arkansan takes charge at UA’s Walton College

The Sam M. Walton College of Business at the University of Arkansas has played an important role in Brent Williams’ life.

He was a graduate student there many years ago. Since 2011, he’s been a faculty member and administrator.

And on Feb. 1, after six months of filling the job on an interim basis, Williams assumed the role of Walton College dean full time. He replaced Matt Waller, who is returning to the classroom to teach supply chain management. Waller held the dean’s position since 2015.

Historically, Williams’ appointment is significant. He is the 11th full-time dean of the UA business school since 1926, but he is the first native Arkansan to have the job since it was renamed in 1998. And perhaps ever.

GORP kicks off 5th outdoor recreation incubator

The Greenhouse Outdoor Recreation Program (GORP) has launched its spring startup incubator with eight Northwest Arkansas startups, including those that rent outdoor gear and make quivers, according to a Jan. 24 news release.

GORP is a business incubation program led by the Office of Entrepreneurship and Innovation (OEI) at the University of Arkansas. GORP is focused on helping outdoor recreation startups and is based at the Collaborative in Bentonville. GORP is supported by a $4.1 million gift from the Walton Family Charitable Support Foundation.

Semiannually, GORP has offered 12-week business incubators for early-stage outdoor recreation startups. The incubator offers workshop training, team mentoring and product and service development to help them scale. GORP provides up to $15,000 in non-dilutive seed money per startup. It’s money that doesn’t require the owner to give up equity in the company.

Arkansas rice companies partner with University of Arkansas campus food pantry

Cormier Rice Milling Co., Riceland and Producers Rice Mill donated to the food pantry and pledged to donate even more. Cormier recently sent 625 pounds to Fayetteville while Riceland and Producers sent 200 pounds each, with more to follow.

Caroline Wilson, the chair for Full Circle Food Pantry, emphasized the needs of the pantry, specifically with rice. She noted how demand for rice means it goes quickly at the pantry.

“Rice is a staple crop and food that so many people use every single day,” Wilson said. “We have a lot of international students on campus who are clients at our pantry because, for international students, we are the only food resource that they are allowed to use. Most food assistance programs are limited to U.S. citizens only. For our international clients, this is literally their only option.”

Wilson also explained that international students at the University of Arkansas on a visa struggle even more because they legally cannot work more than 20 hours weekly. This creates strain on their finances and the ability to afford groceries and other essentials. 

“It’s really important for us to provide foods that are used daily in peoples’ diets,” she said. “The rice on our shelves right now may look like a lot, but that will not even last us through the semester. We just go through it so quickly because it's something that so many people love.”

Katelyn Helberg, the alternative assistance coordinator for the pantry, also said the pantry is often in need of rice. 

“Rice is something that a lot of our clients typically want,” Helberg said “We’re currently serving around 1,100 clients a month. You can imagine how many people we’re trying to distribute to, and rice is something more expensive for us to buy and supply in the pantry.”

Back in the fall 2022 semester, a group of students visited with the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences Dean’s Partnership Council. The students shared information about food insecurity on campus with Jean-Francois Meullenet, interim dean of the college. 

Meullenet, while serving as interim dean since July 2022, is also senior associate vice president for agriculture research with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture and director of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station. Meullenet recognized an opportunity to use his food industry connections to help. 

“We are the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences, and that ‘food’ part is very important,” Meullenet said. “It was eye-opening to learn how many people in our community are in need of food. I have connections with industry, so contacting them was really just an easy first step in assisting the food pantry.” 

Meullenet worked with Nathan McKinney, assistant director of the experiment station, to coordinate the rice donations.

Wilson said McKinney came to the pantry first with a generous donation. While there, he offered his business card and said if the pantry ever needed more rice, to contact him. 

“So, we did,” Wilson said. “And we’ve continued that partnership, even when there were times when there wasn’t any rice available to donate. He stayed connected and let us know as soon as there was availability. It’s been so impactful to have that reliable source of donations coming in.”

McKinney gives all credit to the producers in the state. 

“Arkansas rice producers and rice millers have always been generous and gracious with their products, and they will continue to do so.” McKinney said. “They have pledged to give even more in the future.”

“They always give to efforts like this,” Meullenet said. “They will just bring entire pallets of bags of rice and I can tell they are excited to be aware of a need that serves a community well, like the Full Circle Food Pantry.”

Following the first donation, Helberg is anticipating more rice soon. 

“We’re expecting more than 600 pounds,” she said. “With all these 25-pound bags, we take those and portion them out based on our pantry’s portion guides. We try to portion it out so that we can distribute it more equally to many different households. We anticipate that, with this much rice, it will last us even into the spring semester.”

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the average retail value of a pound of rice is about $1.

“We’re just so appreciative of this donation and all donations that come into the pantry,” Wilson said. “I’m really excited to continue any and all partnerships that come our way.”

According to the Division of Agriculture’s 2023 Arkansas Agriculture Profile, Arkansas was the No. 1 rice producer in the United States in 2022. Data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture shows that Arkansas accounted for nearly 50 percent of U.S. rice production last year.

University of Arkansas establishes new position to serve Indigenous students

The University of Arkansas, Fayetteville and the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative (IFAI) on Wednesday announced the creation of a new grant-funded position focused on supporting Native American students.

Funded through a U.S. Department of Agriculture Tribal New Beginnings Grant, the Native American Student Services director “will play a central role in enhancing the overall college experience for U of A Native American students,” according to a press release.

“Investing in the next generation of Native American food and agriculture leaders is an integral part of the broader mission of IFAI, which exists to address the unique needs and challenges of Native American communities through research and educational support,” said Erin Parker, executive director of the Indigenous Food and Agriculture Initiative.

Cooperative Extension Service to offer Experiential Scholars Program internship in Summer 2024

LITTLE ROCK — For college students, internships provide important hands-on training in their field of study. In 2024, students at Arkansas colleges and universities will have the opportunity to dive deep into three focus areas and work with mentors as part of the Cooperative Extension Service’s new Experiential Scholars Program.

SEEKING SCHOLARS — The Cooperative Extension Service will offer a new internship opportunity in Summer 2024 for college students looking for hands-on training in water/soil conservation, food safety/nutrition and health and community and economic development. (Division of Agriculture flyer.) 

“Internships have been shown over and over again to provide many different benefits for participants and organizations,” said Julie Robinson, extension associate professor of leadership for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture. “It helps participants gain real-life work experiences, it helps them decide if they want to work for the organization, and it helps organizations provide those experiences and hopefully onboard some potential future employees.”

Robinson said the program is funded through a $750,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture.

Experiential Scholars Program interns will focus on one of three areas: water/soil conservation, food safety/nutrition and health, or community and economic development. The inaugural program will begin May 20, 2024, and end July 19, 2024. Students can apply at bit.ly/ces-esp-app.

During the nine-week paid summer internship, participants will work with extension mentors. Robinson said faculty in family and consumer sciences, crop, soil and environmental science and community, professional and economic development will serve as the primary mentors for the program, though others may be included in the future.

“Students will work alongside subject matter faculty members and specialists,” Robinson said. “They’ll get to travel around the state, deliver educational programming, plan research and demonstrations, and really shadow and learn from their mentors. They’ll learn more about that specific area of research and focus.”

Recruiting from 1890 institutions

The $750,000 in funding for the program, which covers a five-year grant cycle, will include the cost of interns’ salaries, travel and lodging. Robinson said the goal is to recruit seven students for each year of the grant cycle. Students will be based in or near central Arkansas because they will be traveling often with their extension mentors, whose offices are housed at the extension Little Rock State Office.

The program will recruit applicants from Arkansas colleges and universities and those from surrounding areas, with an emphasis on historically black institutions included in the 1890 land-grant system, which were established under the Second Morrill Act of 1890.

“We will definitely be trying to heavily recruit from the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, potentially even in other states with 1890 institutions,” Robinson said.

Robinson said that in addition to providing scholars with career readiness and leadership skills, the Experiential Scholars Program will also help raise awareness of extension’s mission in the state and develop the next generation of future employees or volunteers.

“Even if the interns who come into this program decide that extension or the Division of Agriculture is not for them, we’ve at least trained people who will understand the programming that we offer,” Robinson said. “They may be future volunteers through Master Gardeners, 4-H, or our Extension Homemakers program, or they may participate in the LeadAR program in the future.

“I love the idea that we will have advocates for the division who understand what we do and can share with those in their community about what a great resource extension is,” she said.

Trustees praise agreement between UA-Fayetteville, Division of Agriculture

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Members of the Board of Trustees on Friday praised an agreement between the University of Arkansas and the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture as a milestone.

Since the Board of Trustees created the Division of Agriculture in 1959, there have been long-standing differences between the Fayetteville campus and the division. For example, faculty with appointments in both institutions had to navigate different processes for tenure, as well as finances and facilities.

The agreement maps out processes and defines roles and responsibilities related to finance and human resources operations, services, benefits, facilities and space allocation, and management of joint faculty and staff appointments.

Land grant history

The University of Arkansas was established at Fayetteville as a land grant university, initially hosting all three land grant missions: agricultural teaching, research and extension, or outreach. In 1959, the Division of Agriculture held the research and extension functions through the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station and the Cooperative Extension Service. The teaching part was left with UAF, in what is now the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences.

At their meeting on Friday at the Fayetteville campus, the trustees heard from Deacue Fields head of the Division of Agriculture; Charles Robinson, chancellor of the University of Arkansas; and Jean-François Meullenet, interim dean of the Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences for UAF and head of the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station for the division.

‘Do what they say can’t be done’

When it came to the effort to reach an agreement Fields offered a line from the “Smokey and the Bandit” theme song, saying they were going to “do what can’t be done.”

“We wanted to make sure this was shaping the trajectory of this relationship in perpetuity,” Fields said after the meeting. “We want this to follow behind us and set the tone for the new relationship we expect to happen from now on.”

Tearing down the wall

“We’ve torn down this wall,” Robinson said. “Now we’re building a culture together because we believe in the same things, and chief of them is helping Arkansas be the best state it could be.”

Meullenet, as interim leader at the Bumpers College and head of the Agricultural Experiment Station, is among those with a foot in each institution and expressed that faculty were fully invested in both.

“I think that with this agreement, we are showing that we work seamlessly toward maximizing our impact on the state and on our mission,” Meullenet said. “I want to convey — from a faculty standing — the faculty in Bumpers College, whether they are majority division or the University of Arkansas, are really fully integrated on this campus. They are as much a part of this campus as any other faculty.”

‘A major milestone’

Trustee Jeremy Wilson, who is a member of the Board of Trustees’ agricultural subcommittee, offered his congratulations.

“Thank you for all the hard work it took to accomplish this,” he said. “It’s a major milestone and I knew this was going to be a great presentation as soon as you said, ‘Smokey and the Bandit.”

Trustee Morril Harrian also gave his encouragement. He noted over the years the contentious relationship between the two institutions. 

This is “absolutely a great day,” he said. “I commend each of you for working this agreement out and look forward to actually hearing one praise the other.”

UA announces $10M donation to College of Engineering

University of Arkansas alumnus Rick Moore has gifted $10 million to the university’s College of Engineering.

Moore was president of the Baton Rouge, La. firm Ford, Bacon & Davis, an affiliate of S&B Engineers and Constructors, for 29 years. He retired in 2020. Moore died this past summer.

According to a UA news release, Moore’s $10 million planned gift will endow funds for scholarships, a professorship, faculty recruitment and provide additional funds to benefit the Ralph E. Martin Department of Chemical Engineering.

USDA grant supports study of melatonin use in pregnant cows grazing toxic fescue on calf growth

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — With support from a $300,000 U.S. Department of Agriculture grant, the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station is continuing research on the use of a common sleep aid for humans to improve weight gains of calves whose mothers grazed toxic fescue while pregnant.

Brittni Littlejohn, assistant professor of animal science for the research arm of the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, and her collaborators were awarded the grant by the USDA’s National Institute of Food and Agriculture to continue evaluating the use of melatonin in pregnant cows to offset the long-term effects on calves when their mothers graze toxic fescue.

Tall fescue is the most common cool-season forage in the southeastern United States. However, it is often infected with an endophyte fungus that produces ergot alkaloids that are toxic to grazing animals and cause constriction of blood vessels. In a preliminary study for the experiment station, Littlejohn saw decreased uterine artery blood flow in pregnant heifers that consumed toxic fescue seed when compared to endophyte-free fescue seed.

A complex system

The preliminary study also showed calves born to heifers that consumed toxic fescue seed weighed an average of 90 pounds lighter at weaning than those born to heifers that consumed endophyte-free fescue seed during gestation. The effects of the toxic fescue to decrease weight gains continue through yearling age, and ongoing research is evaluating performance of these calves in the feedlot, she added.

Prior research by Littlejohn has shown the potential for melatonin administered to pregnant cattle to improve growth performance of calves. Specifically, melatonin tended to improve birth weights of calves, and significantly improved weaning and post-weaning weights of calves whose mothers consumed toxic fescue seed during gestation, she said.

Supporting evidence from her first study showed that pregnant heifers fed melatonin as a supplement led to recovery of more than 70 percent of the loss in weaning weights of calves whose mothers were fed fescue seed infected with the fungus-produced ergot alkaloid.

“We're working to understand and separate out the impacts on the calf that are directly due to changes in the prenatal environment, such as reduced blood flow to the uterus, versus effects on the mother’s physiology after birth, such as milk production, that may indirectly impact the calf,” Littlejohn said.

The current study began in May with a 70-day treatment period where mature pregnant cattle grazed either toxic fescue or endophyte-free fescue pastures and were supplemented with or without melatonin. Uterine and tail artery blood flow, as well as milk yield and composition, are being evaluated in cows from each treatment. Calves born to cattle from each treatment will be evaluated for differences in metabolic function, microbiome populations and feed efficiency to better understand factors influencing potential differences in calf growth.

The two-year experiment is being conducted at the Livestock and Forestry Research Station in Batesville.  

“The current study is still preliminary, but it is one step closer to the producer,” Littlejohn said. “This is more of a true field study, where those pregnant cows are consuming toxic fescue in a grazing scenario.”

The study will also look at melatonin's potential side effects on the calves.

"There are no known adverse effects, but to our knowledge this is the first time melatonin supplementation has been studied in pregnant cows consuming toxic fescue, and it's a very complex system, so we are closely monitoring animals for potential adverse effects," Littlejohn said.

Because melatonin and toxic fescue have been independently associated with changes to the microbiome, Littlejohn said fecal samples will be collected from pregnant cows and calves born to those cows at various intervals for microbiome analyses.

The melatonin will be given to the pregnant cows in their feed at a dose similar to naturally occurring nighttime levels. Although melatonin is known to help people go to sleep, Littlejohn said she has not observed the cows nodding off in the middle of the day.

The groundwork on this patent-pending protocol shows that melatonin supplementation in pregnant cattle grazing toxic fescue has the potential to improve offspring growth performance and increase producer return on investment.

"We hope to not only start filling a profound gap in the current literature, but also test the potential of melatonin as a cost-effective therapeutic," Littlejohn said.

Division of Agriculture co-investigators include Shane Gadberry, professor, extension livestock specialist, and director of the Batesville research station; Beth Kegley, professor of animal science; Jeremy Powell, professor of animal science; Jiangchao Zhao, professor of animal science. Ken Coffey, an animal science professor with the experiment station.

Co-investigators in the study include Mississippi State University's Rhonda Vann, research professor of cattle growth physiology, and Caleb Lemley, associate professor of reproductive physiology. The sub-award to Mississippi State University researchers is $15,000.

The study is supported by USDA-NIFA grant number 2023-67016-39661. The USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service ranks Arkansas 11th in the nation in beef cows that have calved and beef cow replacement heifers, according to the 2023 Arkansas Agricultural Profile published by the Division of Agriculture.
