Arkansas Archeological Society Survey in SW Arkansas

Dr. Michelle Rathgaber and Gillian Steeno of the Arkansas Archeological Survey

Dr. Michelle Rathgaber and Gillian Steeno were the guest speakers at De Queen Lions Club on Tuesday. Both are part of the Arkansas Archeology Society Survey, which has its 2023 Annual Training Program in Archeology and Public Programs in Southwest Arkansas on the De Queen Campus of UA Cossatot. Dr. Rathgaber is the Educational Outreach Coordinator at the Arkansas Archeological Survey. Rathgaber studies Archaeology, Zooarchaeology, and Bone Tools and earned a Ph.D. in 2019 studying the interactions of Mississippian people in Northeast Arkansas and Southeast Missouri with the earthquakes of the New Madrid seismic zone in the late AD1400s/early AD1500s. Gillian is the Society Liaison and recently received a Master’s degree in Anthropology from the University of Arkansas with a thesis that focused on the Carden Bottoms site, an Early Contact period Native American farmstead in the Arkansas River Valley.

UA Cossatot Soccer Coach Justin Hinman was the guest speaker at De Queen Lions Club

UA Cossatot Chancellor Steve Cole shared information on the latest enrollment numbers, new educational programs, and collegiate sports added recently at UA Cossatot. Lion Cole introduced Justin Hinman, the new head soccer coach for the Colts and Lady Colts. The soccer program will begin this fall of 2023. Hinman discussed recruiting, scheduling, community involvement, and Samaritan Fields for the new season. The first match is scheduled for mid-August.

Jeff Tollett of Four States Fiber at De Queen Lions Club

Jeff Tollett, Manager of the Four States Fiber Outside Fiber Plant, updated De Queen Lions Club at Tuesday's noon meeting. As part of the Diamond State network, a coalition of 13 Arkansas Electric Cooperatives, the wholesale broadband provider in the state aims to provide high-speed internet access to 1.25 million rural Arkansans. Southwest Arkansas Electric Cooperative was awarded $53 million in FCC funding to provide high-speed fiber service to over 26,000 homes in Arkansas, Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. The benefits include 100 megabits per second upload/download for $49.95/month and 1 gigabit per second upload/download speeds for $79.95. Tollett also talked about the service reliability focus of Four States Fiber.

Coach Robert Byrd of UA Cossatot at De Queen Lions Club Meeting

Robert Byrd, Athletic Director and head coach of UA Cossatot Colts and Lady Colts, recently spoke at De Queen Lions Club about the success of the basketball teams’ previous season, the upcoming benefit golf tournament at De Queen County Club, and the upcoming season.

De Queen Lions Club Guest Speakers from Youthbuild Program at UA Cossatot

Brentley Morris Student of the Month at De Queen Lions Club Meeting

Brentley Morris, a senior at De Queen High, was awarded Lions Club Student of the Month at the noon meeting Tuesday in De Queen. Brentley is a member of the FFA and has been a member of the Forestry Judging Team. In sports, Brentley played baseball and basketball for the Leopards and was awarded 6th Man of the Year for the basketball team. Brentley will be an honor graduate from De Queen High on May 17th.

Perla Zapata, a senior at De Queen High, was awarded De Queen Lions Club Student of the Month in Tuesday’s noon meeting. Perla is a member of the National Honor Society, the FCCLA, Gifted & Talented, Spanish Club, Young Voters, Tennis Team, Basketball Team, and Soccer Team. Perla attended the FCCLA National Conference in Atlanta, GA and received a gold medal for a group project. She was a senior maid at De Queen Homecoming this year and was voted Miss Congeniality and People’s Choice at the De Queen High School Pageant. She is president of the Student Council and will be an honor graduate this year at De Queen High. Perla plans to attend UCA and has been accepted in the University Scholars Program.

Halle Harp, De Queen Lions Club Student of the Month for December

Halle Harp was recognized as Student of the Month for December at Tuesday’s Lions Club meeting. Halle is a senior at De Queen High and is a member of the National Honor Society and cross country and track teams. She is in the Gifted and Talented Program and is student council reporter. Halle was the 2020 Homecoming Queen at De Queen High. She is a DHS Cheerleader, 2-time All American Cheerleader and is cheer captain. She was selected twice to cheer in Orlando, FL at Varsity Spirit Spectacular.
