Cooperative Extension Service to host artificial insemination training course for cattle producers

HOPE, Ark. — Artificial insemination is a powerful tool that cattle producers can use to improve efficiency and profitability in their herds.

Charles Looney, extension professor of cattle improvement for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, is recognized internationally for his expertise in cattle genetics and reproductive technologies. On June 13-14, Looney will offer a hands-on training course to teach cattle producers how to use the technology.

The workshop will be offered at the Southwest Research and Extension Center, located at 362 Hwy 174 North in Hope, Arkansas. Topics to be covered include:

  • Basic reproductive anatomy and physiology

  • Estrous synchronization

  • Semen handling

  • Pregnancy determination methods

  • Reproductive health

  • Training in artificial insemination on live cattle

Looney also will provide information on nutrition, herd health and record keeping, basic reproductive anatomy and physiology, pregnancy determination methods and more.

The workshop will run 8 a.m.-5 p.m. the first day and 8 a.m.-3:30 p.m. on the second day. Registration is $450 and includes lunch. The registration deadline is June 11, and participants can register at https://uada.formstack.com/forms/beef_cattle_ai_2024

Cattle producers saw price improvements in late 2023

Cattle producers have had several turbulent years with low prices and higher input costs that were fueled largely by drought conditions. Cattle farmers that were able to maintain their herds benefitted in 2023 when prices jumped.

Throughout most of the year, both futures and cash markets for steers, calves and more marked a vast improvement over 2022. By the last week of November, prices for medium and large number one steer calves (weighing 500 to 600 pounds) were above $270 per hundredweight, more than $80 per hundredweight higher than the same time in 2022 and more than $100 higher than the average from 2017-2021.

James Mitchell, assistant professor and extension economist in the Department of Agricultural Economics and Agribusiness at the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, said that the benefits of high prices largely fell to those with access to good grazing and forage.

LITTLE ROCK — Beef cattle inventories across the United States are at their lowest point in more than six decades, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In its biannual cattle report, USDA reported a total of 89.3 million head as of Jan. 1, 2023 — 3 percent lower than the total reported a year ago, and the lowest since 2015. Beef cattle — those bred specifically for slaughter and meat sales — declined 3.6 percent, to 28.9 million head, the lowest total recorded by the agency since 1962.

In “Cattle Market Notes Weekly,” a newsletter focused on the cattle industry, University of Kentucky’s Kenny Burdine and James Mitchell, extension livestock economist for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, wrote this week that the decline came as no surprise.

“There was no question that the beef cow herd had gotten smaller,” Burdine and Mitchell said. It was “just a question of how much smaller.”

For many producers throughout the country, 2022 had offered a perfect storm of economic and weather-related challenges: input costs such as diesel and fertilizer doubling or even tripling, and a hot, dry summer that only increased reliance on groundwater in the absence of rainfall. For cattle producers in particular, drought conditions offered no replenishment of dwindling forage supplies, leaving many producers to cull deeper into their herds than they might have otherwise preferred. Elevated beef cull prices contributed to an 11 percent increase in beef cow slaughter, according to USDA.

As Mitchell recently pointed out, however, the reduced supply combined with steady demand from the U.S. consumer at least meant greater profitability for those producers with stock to sell.

“There is a pretty substantial biological lag in the beef supply chain,” he said. “What consumers experience at the grocery store is a product of what cattle producers were going through a year or two ago. It takes about two years for a new calf to become the steak on your dinner plate.

“To the extent that we’ve got historically low cattle stocks today, that will lead to tighter cattle production, which means potentially higher beef prices,” Mitchell said. “From the perspective of cattle producers, this also means higher prices. The recent report from USDA just reinforces a bullish outlook on cattle prices for the next couple of years.”

The downward trend in cattle production does not appear likely to reverse itself in 2023. According to USDA’s cattle-on-feed data, the number of cows on feed as of Jan. 1 fell 4 percent from 2022 numbers, to about 14.2 million, marking the first year-over-year decline in beef production in eight years, Burdine and Mitchell wrote.

Cattle improvement professor receives award for his contributions

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. — Reproductive technologies are some of the most powerful means for genetic improvement in cattle, but tools like artificial insemination are not widely used. Charles Richard Looney, professor of genetic improvement in cattle for the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture, wants to improve the industry through research and outreach on reproductive technologies.

Looney, cattle improvement extension specialist and researcher with the Arkansas Agricultural Experiment Station, received the Producer Education Award from the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association in late July for his contributions to the furtherment of cattle producer education in Arkansas.

His Work

Looney and other researchers focused on improving the genetics of beef cattle, promote artificial insemination as the most straightforward method. This technology has been around since the 1950s but is used by less than 5 percent of producers in the country, Looney said.

“It is by far the most powerful technology of bringing in new genetics,” Looney said. “So, some of the bulls you can obtain frozen semen from have values of more than $100,000. Typical farmers couldn’t afford to pay for that type of bull, but they could use those genetics from artificial insemination.”

Incorporating genes that correlate to higher quality cattle are one of the desired outcomes of artificial insemination, Looney said as an example.

Alongside his research on artificial insemination are his more recent projects of estrous synchronization, a process that syncs cows’ reproductive cycles and can allow for the artificial insemination of many cows at once.

Looney and his team have been testing the process for three years at the Savoy Research Complex near Fayetteville, the Livestock and Forestry Research Station in Batesville, and the Southwest Research and Extension Center in Hope. They administer veterinary approved pharmaceuticals that affect the cows’ estrous cycles and then artificially inseminate the cows with conventional or sexed semen.

Through these efforts, the researchers have been able achieve more than 50 to 60 percent success on the first day of the 60-day breeding season. If cows become pregnant early on, they calve sooner and wean with heavier calves. Calves are sold by weight, so it leads to a higher profit if they wean heavier, Looney said.

The high rates of pregnancy are also important because it can take about $600-$800 per year to take care of a cow, Looney said. That includes forage fertilizer, insurance on the land, feed, and more.

“If that cow doesn’t have a calf, and you don’t know it until after the time of calving, you spent all that money for nothing,” Looney said. 

Through his extension work, Looney also demonstrates how to use an ultrasound to determine pregnancy in cattle. He said when many farmers see the developing calves, they are motivated to plan ahead and use better management practices. Blood tests that work similarly to a human pregnancy test are other tools Looney demonstrates to determine pregnancy in the cattle.

Though Looney wants many people to adopt his practices, he is aware that it is not feasible for some cattle producers in Arkansas.

The process of estrous synchronization takes multiple handlers and facilities. But overall, the procedures lead to sustainable practices for the cattle producers. And to Looney, that means being a good steward of the land while also being able to remain in the business, have a legacy and be profitable in the present.

Looney said profit for cattle producers is the top priority of his research program, noting how tough the cattle business is.

His Award

The Producer Education Award is presented yearly to highlight and show appreciation to the people leading the Arkansas cattle industry forward. Cody Burkham, the executive vice president of the Arkansas Cattlemen’s Association, said he appreciates Looney’s impact on Arkansas cattle producers.

“Dr. Looney’s knowledge and expertise in cattle genetics have impacted Arkansas cattle producers exponentially,” Burkham said. “We are grateful to have someone of his caliber working to better producers’ operations and cattle in our state.”

Mike Looper, department head of animal science for the Division of Agriculture and the Dale Bumpers College of Agricultural, Food and Life Sciences at the University of Arkansas, said he is always appreciative when the outstanding faculty in animal science get recognized for their efforts to support animal agriculture. 

“Dr. Looney thoroughly enjoys working with producers with an eye toward increasing reproductive efficiency in our state beef herd,” Looper said. “Congratulations to Dr. Charles Looney. Well deserved!”

An Arkansas native, Looney worked in the bovine transfer industry in Texas for 30 years before returning to work for the Division of Agriculture in 2018.

“My number one job every morning when I get up is trying to figure out how to help these guys and gals do better in their cattle breeding programs and their overall lives,” Looney said.

“I’m just real humbled to be able to serve the people of Arkansas.”

All of Arkansas is in a drought for the first time in 10 years. Conditions are rough for all of agriculture.

Hay production has all but stopped in the majority of the state, with estimates of drastically less hay harvested this year and a need to start feeding it soon because of limited grass.

Cattle are being sold at a drastically increased rate at Arkansas livestock markets because of limited grazing.

The ACA and Governor Asa Hutchinson have requested a USDA Drought Disaster Declaration for the entire state of Arkansas.

The ACA has also requested $3.5 million for the Arkansas Department of Agriculture to create a new program to help producers through this time - the Arkansas Emergency Feed Assistance Transportation Program.

This program would provide financial assistance to producers on transportation costs of feedstuffs, including hay, during this drought.

Arkansas cattle producers facing ‘disaster’ as record drought conditions worsen

Drought conditions in Arkansas continue to worsen and it’s starting to have an impact on the state’s largest economic sector, agriculture. The impacts to row crops won’t be known for a while, but the cattle industry is in peril.

There are growing reports that cattle farmers are selling off livestock to cut their losses. Farmers in this industry rely on grass fields and hay to supplement costlier feed. The withering conditions are affecting pasture performance statewide.

Parts of Arkansas haven’t had any measurable rain since late May. The National Agricultural Statistics Service’s weekly crop report indicates that 43% of pastures are in poor or very poor condition.

Lack of rain impacting row crops, cattle; corn, soybean prices remain at decade highs

Corn and soybean prices continue to soar upwards, but the lack of rain could eat into row crop farmers’ profits. Grain price hikes are negatively impacting cattle producers.

Less than an inch of rain has fallen in Jonesboro during the month of June, which is 56% less than normal, according to the National Weather Service. Temperatures have consistently been in the mid-90s and have topped 100 degrees several days during the month.

The extreme heat and lack of rain are leading to abnormally dry conditions in some parts of Northeast Arkansas which is the stage before drought conditions set in, according to NWS. Counties with those dry conditions include parts of Clay, Fulton, Mississippi, Randolph and Sharp counties. The number of counties with abnormally dry conditions could grow when the NWS releases a drought monitor update in July.

Cold Weather May Impact Cattle Breeding this Spring

Record cold weather just prior to the start of spring could have a significant impact on the number of cattle produced during 2021. Cattle breeding experts with the University of Arkansas System Division of Agriculture are urging cattle producers to test the fertility of their bulls before the spring breeding season.

Charles Looney, professor of cattle improvement for the Division of Agriculture, said the unusual freeze event the state experienced in mid-February may have resulted in infertility in bulls that did not have adequate shelter.
